Ironman
" If God invented marathons to keep people from doing anything more stupid, triathlon must have taken Him completely by surprise." P. Z. Pearce, M.D.
"If you have to ask why, you 'll never understand: face your fear, beat your limits, live your dream !"
Short History
All starts in a nice day in Hawaii ....1978
Navy Cmdr. John Collins invents Ironman Triathlon, a triple-endurance event based on three existing long-distance races: the Waikiki Rough Water Swim (2.4 miles), the Around-Oahu Bike Race (112 miles, originally a two-day event) and the Honolulu Marathon (26.2 miles). Fifteen men participate in the initial event held on February 18; 12 managed to complete the race.
1979 On January 14, 12 of 15 starters complete the Ironman. San Diego's Tom Warren, 35, wins in 11 hours, 15 minutes and 56 seconds. The first and only female competitor, Lyn Lemaire of Boston, places fifth overall by finishing in 12:55:38. Sports Illustrated covers the Ironman and calls the participants "lunatic."
1980 For the first time, ABC's "Wide World of Sports" covers the Ironman, bringing it worldwide recognition. The January event draws 106 men and two women. Dave Scott, a 26-year-old masters swim coach from Davis, Calif., wins the event in 9:24:33. Robin Beck wins the women's division in 11:21:24, placing 12th overall. The Ironman ignites international enthusiasm for swim-bike-run events, and triathlons begin to develop around the world, especially with shorter and more human races !

Bib Number 1314

As you can see I've removed the Ironman Oz 07 section, this is because I have have now, for the moment, stopped Ironman racing. Other 'events' will now take priority, namely cycling sportives and of course WPFG's '07 in Adelaide.
However I have kept a diary of IMC 06 (see below), the event was again a great success for racers and organisers alike. It really is a good day out!
